Should you notify your current landlord?

This only applies if you’re currently renting. You need to give notice to your landlord that you’re going to be moving out.  By IL law, if you have a month to month lease then you only need to give 30 days notice.  If you have a yearly lease, you need to give 60 days notice before your lease term ends if you’re planning to move out.  For instance, if your lease ends June 1, you need to let the landlord know by April 1 if you are going to be renewing your lease or are moving.

Are there other options if I am in a yearly lease, that isn’t going to end in the next few months?

Yes, you have a few options

  1. We can try to negotiate the closing date for further out.
  2. You can keep both places until the end of your lease so you have plenty of time to move from your rental apartment to your new home. This means paying the monthly rent plus your mortgage payment for the remainder of your lease.
  3. You can attempt to get subleaser in for the remainder of your lease term.  In Chicago, you have the legal right to find a subleaser for your apartment.  If you want us to help you find a subleaser, let us know. Just know if there are a lot of apartments in the inventory in your area it might not go as quickly as we would like, also it is easier during rental season which is typically from March to August.
